Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it.
Rule 2: The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.![]()
Rule 3: You will NOT make $40,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.![]()
Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.![]()
Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping-they called it opportunity.![]()
Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.![]()
Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you are. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parents' generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.![]()
Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life has not. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.![]()
Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you find yourself. Do that on your own time!![]()
Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.![]()
Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.![]()

These rules are great! And as usual - so are your pictures!

Totally love this post! Love the advice, and how perfectly the pictures go with each. How do you have time to organize these so well?! :-) Great job!
That Bill Gates is one smart man!
I love this advice!! LOVE IT! I wish I could post it in my classroom...but something tells me that I will be in a whole bunch of parent conferences if I DID!
Great advice!!! I'd like it to get through to my teenager!!
Awww Shoshi!! :(
So true! Should be part of all kids curriculum and posted everywhere.
So glad you stopped by our blog and liked the rules! We loved them, too. Your pics are beautiful.

I love all of this!!!!!
Missing Shoshi for you too. :)
xoxox
All of these are so true. I especially like the ones about having to actually work if you want money and respect.
PS. Sorry I've been MIA. It's been a crazy rough few weeks and you are a posting maniac! ;)
I got a total kick out of this list, especially #8.
And the picture of Shoshi hanging off the stairs ... love.
LOVE Rule #7. I am going to have to remember that when my boys are teenagers and they think I am boring!
Rule 11 is great too! That's why I married a nerd!
As they say, pull up your big girl/boy pants and deal with it.
Great photos on life.
great advice. i have read several articles on him and his family...he seems very down to earth. I like that. :)
Your photos ALWAYS make me smile. It's so nice to come home after a busy, hectic day and see a new post from you.

Do you have any contact with Shoshi at all? I hope so. He is thinking about you also, I know. Love Bill Gate's rules. Wish eveyone realized how true they are.
These worlds couldn't be more true!
Excellent advice and fab photos!!!!
Love the rules, going to share a few with my boy, especially the one about his parents being cool at one point lol.
i am drawn to the 9th(i think) picture of the man on the bench shot from above. I wonder what he is thinking about as he sits there.Love all the shots
Great advice, and the pictures that go with it are perfect. :)
Really loved this. Great way to start the day! :)
#7 is my favorite at this moment in time :)
Love these - number 7 is my favorite!
Bill Gates rocks!
<><
What perfect rules!! And the photos are just excellent to go along with them!
#7 is something I sometimes need reminded of, even as an adult...LOL
Amen.
Good rules, they ought to be posted on every teenager's bedroom door. Life is not fair, but just for awhile. It will soon be more than fair.
That's life. Great rules from real life...with beautiful pictures as always!
More than the rules, I liked all the accompanying photographs.
So natural and spontaneous.
I want to print this out & hang on the fridge at home. Great post!
You always put together such wonderful pictures and thoughtful words. Love visiting you here :)
definitely words of wisdom for "kids these days"
I LOVE those words of wisdom! Great advice!! I especially loved the line "If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them." So true. People use their parents as an excuse for EVERYTHING! I also love the part about TV not being real life...people actually leave the coffee shop and GO to work! LOL. :)
Those pictures are wonderful!
Hope you're having a fab Friday!♥
I am loving Rule #7!
Excellent rules!!!
Looooooooooove this!!!!
So refreshing! I love these :)
Fabulous advice. I especially like the one about how your parents got so boring!
This is the BEST advice!! And perfect for any age! So something you'd find on my quote blog too... especially the boss one ;-)
So. Darn. True.
great rules and I love how the pictures illustrate them.
Good old Bill, he is a smart man. And you take wonderful pictures! Thanks for your visit to the Northwoods.
Have a good weekend,
Hanneke
Very sage advice. Nice to see someone that's in the spotlight say its not all about me!
Loved the 10 rules - allll so applicable and true. The photos that go along with are ever so beautiful :)
Kristin
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this! I read the rules out loud to my 13 year old son that argues with me & husband every day about not having a cell phone. i told him when he can pay for it, he can have it. he also thinks i'm boring... so this was perfect!
some pretty good stuff.
love,
kari

Those rules are awesome!
Thinking of you and hoping that your Shoshi is happy too. Hugs.
